Who are we?

We are Decem, Janisa and Teresa. A group of Arts students in the University of Hong Kong, major in Language and Communication. Currently we are doing a group research for a course called "Cultural dimensions of language and communication". In this course, we learn to apply the academic knowledge and sociolinguistic theories to analyse the linguistic data, and investigate the linguistic phenomenon in society.

Through this website, we wish to to highlight the significance of linguistic and cultural diversity, and the UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day (21 February), through raising awareness of the various less well-known multilingual communities, in which we have picked the Thai community in Hong Kong. We would also like to draw the attention of the Thai-speaking group in Hong Kong to their communicative practices, as well as their mother tongue(s) positioned alongside other languages of global and local significance.

Language is not simply a tool for communication, but also a marker of identity. Thus, we have investigated the linkage between language and identity in the Thai-speaking community in Hong Kong - how the immigrants relate the language they use to their roles and identity, and the rational behind. By presenting our research findings and some interesting information about them, we wish to preserve the linguistic and cultural diversity by arousing public's attention and interest in learning and appreciating the language and culture of the minority Thai-speaking group in Hong Kong.
